Leas Forum: New Jersey’s Changing ClimateSat, May 1111:00 am – 12:00 pmLeas Forum: New Jersey’s Changing ClimateTheater
Within the past decade or so, New Jersey has experienced its wettest and warmest years in over a century of observations. Extreme weather/climate events, including Ida, Sandy, and Irene, along with many other excessive rainfall events, and numerous hot summers, suggest that something is happening to NJ’s climate regime. Natural variations alone cannot account for these anomalies. Human influences on climate are significant, prompting discussion as to how society might mitigate or develop greater resiliency to increasing climate change. This presentation explores the physical short- and long-term dimensions of the issue.
Dr. David Robinson is a Distinguished Professor of Geography at Rutgers University and has been New Jersey’s State Climatologist since 1991. He is a frequent speaker on issues pertaining to New Jersey’s weather and climate and is a contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and to US National Climate Assessments through his research involving global snow cover. He has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, is past president of the American Association of State Climatologists, has received the Lifetime Achievement award of the American Association of Geographers, and is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.

Pathways: The Secret World of Plants & PollinatorsWed, May 2210:00 am – 11:00 amPathways: The Secret World of Plants & PollinatorsTheater
This presentation will focus on the incredible ways in which plants communicate with animals. Flowers are not pretty colors and pleasant smells for us—it’s all about the pollinators. Discover amazing strategies of plants, the colors that pollinators see, and ways in which both plants and animals can help or deceive each other. Did you know that a bee’s eye view is extremely different from what we see, and from what a bird sees? Participants will find that taking a much closer look at flowers can open up an entire hidden world that is more complex and fascinating than one ever imagined.
